For 2009, we are pleased to have our friends at the XK Register joining us on the 2nd of August for what promises to be a fantastic day out at the Motorsport and Aviation Museum at Brooklands
.
Brooklands bills itself as the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation. The world's first motor racing track was built there between 1906 and 1907. This was used by Selwyn Francis Edge in June 1907 to establish a 24 hour record of 1581 miles in a six-cylinder Napier. This record was to stand for 17 years.
In addition to the racing circuit, workshops at Brooklands were responsible for building many high performance cars, including three of Malcolm Campbell's Blue Bird land speed record vehicles.
Brooklands aviation heritage is also unrivalled. Following A.V.Roe's first British powered flight in 1908, Brooklands became home to several famous companies including Vickers, Sopwith and Hawker Siddeley. During both World Wars, aircraft from Brooklands formed an important part of Britain's air capabilities. These included the Hurricane and the Wellington bomber.
More recently. the Concorde supersonic plane was initiated at Brooklands, and more parts of the aircraft were designed and built at Brooklands than any other site.
There is an extensive museum covering both the motoring and aviation history, including major exhibits such as a Concorde aircraft and a wide selection of racing cars.
As in previous years, we will meet in a local hotel on the Saturday evening for dinner. Details of this will follow once they are confirmed.
On Sunday there will be parking for our vehicles in our own compound at the heart of Brooklands. This will allow the public to view our cars, and also the concours competition to be judged. As usual, the concours winner will go forward to the Champion of Champions competition at the NEC in November.
Further details will be announced in the Jaguar Drivers Club magazine, and on this website.
